The Heckler & Koch 416 was the service rifle used to kill Osama bin Laden. If that doesn’t tell you this is one hell of a gun, nothing will.

If you're checking its value to prepare to sell your gun, ensure you follow federal rules. Read our guide on how to sell a gun online to stay 100% legal.

How we Differentiate the MR556A1 and MR556A4 HK416 Rifles?

What are the MR556A1 and MR556A4 rifles? They’re the civilian versions of the original military H&K 416.

These are the main differences between them and the original:

  • Slightly different barrel designs
  • Differently tuned pistons
  • Semi automatic fire (fully automatic on the military version)
  • Lack of chrome lining on the barrel (found in the military version)
  • Civilian-available (only military and law enforcement can get the military version)

How We Calculate Used HK416 Values

The price of an HK416 is affected by its model, condition, upgrades, and accessories. Market demand plays a part too, of course.

Let’s go over those factors so we can price your HK416 more accurately.

How We Appraise HK416 Models

HK416 22 LR Price

HK416 22 LR

The HK416 22 LR is worth around $200 to $400 used if a rifle, $180 to $380 if a pistol. Its MSRP brand-new is $749.

This is the one most US owners have. Fitted with a 16” barrel and the classic HK416 styling, it’s known as a gun that shoots flat and fun.

It comes in both rifle and pistol versions. The prices of used HK416 rifles don’t vary too much between them.

MR556A1 Price

MR556A1

The MR556A1 is worth around $1,400 to $2,200 used. Its MSRP brand-new is $3,499.

The older tweaked civilian version of the HK416, the MR556A1 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO rounds. It’s made in the US and sports a 16.5” barrel with a Magpul buttstock and Modular Rail System.

Perhaps the most compelling part of this sporterized rifle is that its upper is compatible with lowers of the AR-15, M16, and M4 type. That’s why you’ll often see modded versions of it today.

MR556A4 Price

MR556A4

The MR556A4 is worth around $2,000 to $3,400 used. Its MSRP brand-new is $4,299.

An update of the MR556A4, it offers a lot of new upgrades. Most significant are the ambidextrous safety, adjustable gas block, and M-LOK handguard.

It’s also engineered to be slightly lighter than the A1 version.

HK416D SF Price

HK416D SF

The HK416D SF is worth around $14,000 to $25,000 preowned due to extreme rarity.

Meet the unicorn! This is the rarest HK416 rifle in the US and the only true semi-auto HK416 if we go by official name.

Now, the HK416D SF isn’t likely to show up in your average used gun marketplace… but it’s still worth discussing for its legendary status. Only a few of these were ever imported to the US. In fact, they’re so rare that most people in the gun industry know who owns the existing ones!

These guns are German semi-auto HK416s imported and used by LEOs (law enforcement officers). Since most had 10.4” or 14.5” barrels, they were classified as short-barreled rifles by the NFA.

So, surplus guns sold to civilians typically had to be altered to be at least 16” instead. With only about 300 of these imported into the US, intact ones are very rare.

Only 7 of the 10.4”-barrel ones are known to be civilian-legal here. Of the 14.5” ones, it’s around 15. That contributes to HK416D SF pricing – and forgeries.

This is a model that holds value well. Because it’s a premium firearm in the line, we use a secure gun shipping and buying system to ensure every transaction is fully insured and legally compliant.

How Upgrades Affect What We Pay for Your HK

HK416 rifle accessories

Some upgrades can bring value up. Here are the ones we see most often. All figures are for upgrades or accessories in good condition.

Sling

A popular adjustment to make toting either gun more convenient. Even on the lighter HK416 rifle, slings are appreciated. Expect the sling to keep 30% to 50% of its value.

Examples:

  • H&K MR556 and HK416 Tactical Sling - Around $23 to $38 used
  • Vickers Padded Sling - Around $22 to $36 used

Foregrip or Hand Stop

These are added to improve control and help users avoid heat from the gun in use. Both gun models use MLOK rails for this area, by the way. Expect value retention of 30% to 50% for a good HK416 handguard or foregrip.

Examples:

  • Blue Ridge HK Assault Grip (Vertical) - Around $20 to $32 used
  • Magpul M-LOK Hand Stop Kit - Around $7 to $12.50 used

Stock

Upgrades for this don’t happen much to the HK416 22 LR. Even in the MR556s, they’re not common.

That’s probably due to how well the big HK416 stock balances the heavy front of the MR. It’s usually more about customizing the look instead. Since it’s not often a functional upgrade, expect value retention of just 20% to 40%.

Examples:

  • Bravo Stock - Around $12 to $30 used
  • Magpul CTR Carbine Stock - Around $13 to $32 used

Spare Magazines

The restrictions for these will obviously vary by state, but you can get magazines with as many as 30 rounds in them for these guns. These are usually popular additions to guns for resale too.

Examples:

  • HK416 22 LR magazines - $10 to $15 per used mag
  • MR556A1 magazines - $18 to $25 per used mag

General Questions & Answers

Yes, civilians can buy Heckler & Koch 416. There is a semi-automatic version available for civilians, which uses a gas piston system with a rod that prevents propellant gases from being introduced into the weapon. This version of the gun can be sold or purchased depending on the state and federal laws in your location.

A HK416 .22 LR is around $500 new and often $200 to $400 used. But if you’re talking about the MR556A1 (the tweaked 5.56 civilian version), it’s around $3,100 new and often $1,400 to $2,200 used.

The H&K416 A5 is just a modern, post-2016 HK416 rifle (the military and law-enforcement version chambered for 5.56 NATO, specifically). The A5 just indicates that it’s the version that Heckler & Koch has already improved in terms of design.

The current market value of a Heckler & Koch 416 rifle is around $300 on average for a .22 LR model. If you have a different gun – like the prized HK416D SF – the price will change. For an accurate valuation, read our value guide above or reach out to our appraisers today. We appraise guns online for free!

The HK416 is generally available to civilians only in its .22 LR version. Generally, civilians who want a 5.56 HK416 have to settle for one of two options. First, they can buy an MR556A1 or MR556A4, the civilian versions in the US. Second, they can opt for a clone instead.

It depends on whom you ask, but a lot of people will point to the high reliability of the short-stroke gas piston as the main thing making the HK416 special. The civilian 5.56 version’s compatibility with AR-15 and M16 components also make it popular. The gun’s iconic usage in both games and military engagements adds to it too!

Whether the HK416 is better than the M4A1 is up for debate. Most people just tend to assume it is because it typically costs much more! That said, some say it’s better because the short-stroke piston is said to be more reliable after hitting a high number of rounds. Another argument made for the HK416’s superiority is its accuracy. It also has an easier-to-clean action than the gas-impingement M4A1. But the HK416 vs M4 battle still isn’t one we’d say is settled, even given all that!

The Heckler & Koch 416 is expensive partly because, at the end of the day, it’s made by Heckler & Koch. As with most things from established names like these, you’re paying partly for the prestige of the brand. Aside from that, fans of the gun point to the piston design, cleaner action, high accuracy, and style. The gun also surged in popularity following its use in the killing of Obama bin Laden.

If you’re asking this, you’re probably coming from PUBG. Here’s a quick answer: the HK416 is not called the M416 outside of the game. A lot of games just tweak guns’ names, like Red Dead Redemption 2 calling the Colt SAA a Cattleman Revolver. In real life, though, no-one calls an SAA a Cattleman Revolver. They’re more likely to call it a Peacemaker.

One version of the HK416 is fully automatic. That HK416 assault rifle is sold only to military and law enforcement and is a select-fire gun. The civilian versions of the HK416 are semi-automatic, however.

The military/law-enforcement version of the HK416 weighs about 8.5 lbs while the civilian .22 LR version weighs about 5.7 lbs.

Yes, the HK416 is still used. In fact, a few armed or special forces still use it, including some of our own units. Other forces using the HK416 rifle include the French and the Germans.

If you still want to sell a Heckler & Koch rifle, talk to us. We buy them often and can even pick up entire gun collections of them!
