How We Calculate Marlin 336 Values
Marlin 336 value is affected by its condition, variant, year of manufacture, manufacturer (some were made by other companies!), and upgrades made to it.
Condition and Value

Better-condition Model 336 rifles are worth more. To get your firearm’s condition, get a gun appraisal from an expert.
Determining the exact condition of a Marlin can be subjective. To see how we professionally evaluate your firearm (for free) and turn that condition into a payout, view our 3-step selling process for a guaranteed FFL offer.
The appraisal can involve a fee at most gun shops, by the way, but not with us.

How We Appraise Marlin 336 Models
Below are the different Marlin 336 models you can often find in the preowned market.
Marlin 336 Classic / 336C Value

The average used Marlin 336C is worth $400 to $900. A new Marlin 336 Classic costs $1,200 at retail.
The 336C is the classic, carbine-length beauty of the series. The difference between it and the 336W is the walnut stock and polished, blued barrel.
The Marlin 336 Classic value range tends to be stable. It’s probably the most popular and recognizable of the 336 rifles.
Marlin 336W Price / Glenfield 336 Value

The average used Marlin 336W is worth $400 to $800.
The Marlin 336W is basically the 336C with a hardier, subtler look. It uses a birch stock and a matte finish and is actually the successor to the Glenfield line of 336s.
What are the Glenfield 336 rifles? These were cheaper versions of the 336C that used hardwood over walnut. They were often sold at department stores like Sears.
Since these are technically 336Ws, you’ll often see them sold under this designation and at this value. Here are the actual model names stamped on them (often chosen by their retailers):
- Glenfield Model 30, 30A, 30AS, or 30AW
- J.C. Higgins Model 45 or 50
- Model 3000
- Western Field Model 740-A EMN
- Foremost Model 3040
- Model 30TK
- Model 30AW
Marlin 336 XLR Value

The average used Marlin 336 XLR is worth $600 to $1,300.
This is one of the bigger Marlin Model 336 rifles, with a 24” barrel. Marlin 336 XLR value is higher than 336C values as it comes in stainless steel with a laminated-wood stock. It’s also designed for spire point bullets.
Marlin 336Y Value

The average used Marlin 336Y is worth $400 to $800.
Called the “Youth Model,” the Marlin Model 336Y was made specifically for youth and smaller shooters. It comes with a 16.25” barrel and shorter stock. Despite that, it’s close to the full-size Marlin 336 30-30 price.
Marlin 336BL Value

The average used Marlin 336BL is worth $400 to $800.
What is a Marlin 336BL? It’s the “Big-Loop-lever” version of the 336. Similar in looks to the 336W, it also comes with blued steel and a laminated hardwood stock.
The big loop is designed to make handling easier in scenarios where the shooter has gloves or needs rapid cycling. The barrel on this one is also a shorter 18.5” for easier handling in the brush.
Marlin 336SS Value

The average used Marlin 336SS is worth $500 to $1,050 used.
The 336SS is fitted with stainless steel (hence the “336SS”) for better corrosion resistance and has the traditional 20” barrel. The wood is black walnut fitted with a rubber butt pad.
Marlin Model 1936 / Model 36 Value

The average used Marlin Model 1936 is worth $500 to $1,100 used.
It may not be named a Marlin 336 but the Marlin Model 1936 was the very first 336 by design. Introduced in 1936, it was renamed the Marlin Model 36 in 1937. This finally became the 336 in 1948.
The earliest ones are popular with collectors despite being on the older side. Look out for cracks in the older guns’ stocks. That brings down value.
Marlin 336 Dark Series Value

The average used Marlin 336 Dark Series is worth $650 to $1,200. A new Marlin 336 Dark Series sells for $1,429 at retail.
The Marlin 336 Dark Series valuation tends to stay up because demand is high. Marlin only makes this tactical, blacked out gun in limited numbers.
Marlin 336 SC Value

The average used Marlin 336 SC is worth $300 to $700.
Made from 1948 to 1963, the Model 336 SC (Sporting Carbine) had the then-rare, now-common 20” blued barrel. It also had a 2/3 magazine, which is no longer common in the current models.
Marlin 336 RC Value

The average used Marlin 336 RC is worth $400 to $800.
This is the Regular Carbine version of the SC, equipped with a full magazine and barrel bands. This version is still in production.
Marlin 336ER Value

The average used Marlin 336ER is worth $800 to $1,600, but it varies.
ER stands for “extra range,” as this gun was supposed to have a range that went beyond 200 yards. It’s rare, as only about 2,441 were made for the public from 1983 to 1986.
This is a model that holds value well. Because it’s a premium firearm in the line, we use a secure gun shipping and buying system to ensure every transaction is fully insured and legally compliant.

The Impact of the Manufacturer on Our Offers

Marlin Firearms made the first Marlin 336 rifles. That’s no surprise.
However, Remington Arms then bought Marlin Firearms in 2007. That’s why 336 rifles made in 2007 to 2020 were called “Remlins” or “Remlin 336s.”
In 2020, Remington went bankrupt, so Marlin Firearms was sold again. This time, it went to Sturm, Ruger, & Co. So, new 336s are technically made by Ruger now.
Here’s an easy way to remember this based on date of manufacture and used gun value:
1936 to 2007 - Marlin Firearms
- Worth around $50 to $200 more than Remlin value
- Classic, traditional style and manufacture
- Stamped “JM” for the founder, John Mahlon Marlin
2007 to 2020 - Remington Arms
- Worth around $50 to $200 less than Marlin or Ruger ones
- Had quality control issues, especially in the early years
- Produced particularly suspect 336s in 2009 to 2014
- Problems included poor machining, poorly fitted parts, and crooked barrels
2020 and later - Ruger (Sturm, Ruger, & Co.)
- Worth around $50 to $200 more than Remlin 336 value
- Modernized, updated machining and manufacture
When Was My Marlin 336 Made?
If you’re not sure when your Marlin 336 was made, you can tell by the serial number. The dating method varies if your gun is was made before or after 1973.
Dating Marlin 336 Rifles from 1946 to 1972
For this period, the prefixes for the serial numbers changed by year:
- 1946 (Model 36) - C
- 1947 (Model 36) - D
- 1948 - E
- 1959 - G
- 1951 - H
- 1952 - J
- 1953 - K
- 1954 - L
- 1955 - M
- 1956 - N
- 1957 - P
- 1958 - R
- 1959 - S
- 1960 - T
- 1961 - U
- 1962 - V
- 1963 - W
- 1964 - Y, Z
- 1965 - AA
- 1966 - AB
- 1967 - AC
- 1968 - AD, 68
- 1969 - 69
- 1970 - 70
- 1971 - 71
- 1972 - 72
Dating Marlin 336 Rifles from 1973 or Later
If your gun was made in 1973 or later, the method for finding the year of manufacture changes. Just get the first two digits of the serial number, then subtract them from 100.
For example, if your gun’s serial number is SN 23081384, it was made in 1977.
Why? Because the first two digits of that serial number are 23.
Subtract 23 from 100 and you get 77.
Thus, the gun was made in the year ‘77.
