Most people know Heckler & Koch’s Selbstladegewehr 1998 by its abbreviated name: the HK or H&K SL8. Sold to the civilian market, this is a semi-automatic many seek for its similarity to the HK G36.

It was discontinued in 2010 but H&K has promised a return since. In the meantime, relative scarcity of the rifle may help you if you’re selling yours.

If you're wondering "How much is my HK SL8 worth," this guide will help. This should let you value it appropriately.

PS: If you're checking its value to sell your gun, ensure you follow federal rules. Read our guide on how to sell a gun online to stay 100% legal.

Condition and Value

Heckler & Koch SL8

Better-condition H&K SL8 rifles always do better in resale. That’s true for nearly every gun.

Most firearm professionals will charge you a fee for an expert appraisal of your gun’s condition and value. We won’t and even allow you to get the appraisal online.

To see how we professionally evaluate your firearm (for free) and turn that condition into a payout, view our 3-step selling process for a guaranteed FFL offer.

If you already have an expert appraisal of your gun’s condition, though, you can try using this tier guide to value it:

How We Appraise HK SL8 Models

H&K SL8

Heckler & Koch made several H&K SL8 variants. The ones available in the US civilian market are the ones below.

H&K SL8-1 Value

The average H&K SL8-1 is worth around $640 to $1,500 used. It originally sold for around $1,250 new when it was first launched.

This was the original SL8 in the US, with a gray stock and long Picatinny rail with iron sights. Its thumbhole stock and 10-round mag were designed to comply with the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban (AWB).

Superb-condition versions of this can cost more than the original MSRP now. Those with the magazine conversion are particularly desirable.

H&K SL8-6 Value

The average H&K SL8-6 is worth around $720 to $1,500 used. It originally sold for around $1,699 new when it was first launched.

This is the more recent version of the US SL8. H&K replaced the gray stock with a black one but kept the single-stack magazine and fixed thumbhole. The Picatinny rail was replaced with a short one.

The SL8-6 is easier to convert for improved magazine compatibility as well. This means it’s generally preferred by buyers seeking a gun for use instead of collector’s value.

This is a model that holds value well. Because it’s a premium firearm in the line, we use a secure gun shipping and buying system to ensure every transaction is fully insured and legally compliant.

How Accessories Affect What We Pay for Your HK SL8

HK SL8 parts

Certain upgrades or modifications can add to the value of an SL8. These are the ones we usually see buyers interested in.

G36 Conversions

Some gunsmiths have grown popular off conversions of the HK SL8, like TommyBuilt at Tommy Built Tactical. The conversion changes the SL8 to be closer to the original H&K G36.

The change alters the gun’s appearance, such as by allowing use of a side-folding stock. It also makes the gun compatible with higher-capacity double-stack G36 magazines.

It’s very expensive, however, with the cost of labor alone often hitting around $950.

Value: Depends on the person, as some will want to get the conversion done by their own gunsmith. Some will fork over up to 50% of the conversion cost added to the gun.

Magwell Conversions

Technically, the standard G36 conversion for an SL8 already includes a magwell conversion. But some people want a magwell conversion by itself – and even want the gun to accept STANAG or AR-15 mags, not G36 mags.

This conversion costs a little less than the G36 one. However, it can still run you anywhere from $550 to $750.

Value: Again, it depends on the person. If the conversion was done very well and is desired, you can add around 50% of the conversion’s fee to the amount you ask for.

Optics and Mounts

Trijicon, Holosun, and EOTech are just a few of the usual brands you’ll see people looking for here. As long as your optic or mount is a good one (and is in great condition), you can usually sell it with the gun.

Value: Around 30% to 50% of the original value of the accessory

Spare Magazines

Probably one of the biggest issues with the original SL8 is that it uses proprietary 10-round magazines. If yours doesn’t have the magwell conversion, you might help your rifle sell faster by including spare mags.

Value: Around $25 to $30 per mag
