Value Factor 2: Models or Variants
Colt made several versions of the Trooper, which can affect value. Here are the variants we often see in the resale market.
Original Colt Trooper Value

The average used Original Colt Trooper is worth $400 to $900. Collectible early versions can sell for much more.
The original trooper fired .22 LR, .38 Special, and later, .357 Magnum rounds (which is why it’s sometimes called the Colt 3-5-7, as it’s practically the same gun). The finishes were the typical Colt blue and nickel, with the earliest blued versions having a two-tone finish.
Very good-quality versions of these guns from the 1950s are usually in .38 Special and tend to sell for good sums to collectors. Unfortunately, a fair number of them are seriously pitted by now, and that affects value.
Colt replaced the original Trooper in 1969 with the MK III.
Colt Trooper MK III Value

The average used Colt Trooper MK III is worth $350 to $750. Superb examples, especially the 8” versions, can even reach $2,000.
Introduced in 1969, this line switched the Trooper from Colt’s I-frame to the J-frame, redesigning it so heavily that parts were no longer interchangeable with previous Troopers.
The Trooper MK III revolvers were made until 1983. They also positioned the .357 Magnum Trooper as the highest-end model of the line, although there was a service-grade version of it too: the Colt Lawman MK III.
Colt Lawman MK III Value

The average used Colt Lawman MK III is worth $340 to $700, though some collector-grade guns can sell for $1,000.
This is actually still a Colt Trooper, specifically one of the MK III models. It’s just the service-grade (i.e. economy-grade) version made for duty use.
To bring down manufacturing cost and retail values, the Lawman MK III revolver used fixed sights and had no ejector rod shroud. It also came in only two barrel lengths: 2 and 4 inches.
Note that a few rare late versions of the 2” MK III Lawman came with an ejector rod shroud.
1980 Colt Trooper / Colt MK V Value

The average used Colt MK V is worth $375 to $800, with collector-grade guns going over that.
These are the Colt Troopers of the 1980s. Colt switched frames again (this time to the V frame). These have more in common with the MK III revolvers than the original Troopers, although these introduced a ventilated rib barrel option similar to the Python.
These guns were made from 1982 to 1985, the last line of Troopers to come out of Colt's shops. They also have Lawman versions.
Some people list the Colt Boa as an MK V, by the way, but that model’s technically in a category all by itself thanks to how it straddles the Trooper MK V/Python divide.
Colt Peacekeeper Value

The average used Colt Peacekeeper is worth $325 to $675.
This is pretty much a Colt Trooper MK V with the main difference being that it’s parkerized instead. Think of it as the low-cost version of the MK V revolver, with 4” and 6” barrel options.

Value Factor 3: Accessories or Upgrades

Some accessories can improve the value of a Colt Trooper. Given that it’s a discontinued revolver that leans more toward classic style than anything, though, don’t expect “upgrades” to do that.
Most people prefer guns like these in their original configurations, whether with the original finish or the factory grips. That’s why adding things like custom finishes doesn’t usually boost their resale value.
If you can’t seem to sell your gun with its accessories to anyone, reach out to us. We often take accessories and ammo.
Original Box and Papers
People often want the original box for guns like these. If you have everything that originally came with the gun and it’s all in great condition, sell it!
Value: Usually around $30 to $90 for the matching box and papers.
