The Ruger Blackhawk belongs to the same category as the Colt SAA: centerfire six-shot revolvers straight out of classic Westerns.

Some call it overbuilt, but never out of criticism. This handgun can hold up even after firing thousands of .44 Magnums. That durability’s long been part of its appeal.

If you're checking its value to sell your gun, ensure you follow federal rules. Read our guide on how to sell a gun online to stay 100% legal.

Anyway, let’s find out how much is a Ruger Blackhawk worth today.

How We Calculate Used Ruger Blackhawk Values

Ruger Blackhawk value is affected by the gun’s condition, its model, its finish, and its accessories.

Condition and Values

Ruger Blackhawk condition and value

For standard models, the highest-value ones are obviously those sold new by a retailer. For preowned guns, value is often decided by condition.

You need to get your gun appraised by an expert to identify its condition. While many experts charge a fee for this, we provide free gun appraisal to gun sellers online.

To see how we professionally evaluate your firearm (for free) and turn that condition into a payout, view our 3-step selling process for a guaranteed FFL offer.

From there, you can use the guide below to learn “How much is my Ruger Blackhawk worth.”

How We Appraise Ruger Blackhawk Models

Some models of the Ruger Blackhawk are more valuable than others. We’ll go over the main ones that show up in the resale market here.

Note that we won’t discuss the Blackhawk Convertible as a separate variant, by the way. Here’s why: a Blackhawk Convertible is just a Blackhawk with an extra cylinder.

With it, the only thing you’re paying for over a standard variant is that spare cylinder! You can actually buy that separately for about $100 instead of paying for a Convertible kit.

“Flattop” Ruger Blackhawk Value

Flattop Ruger Blackhawk worth

The average used Flattop Ruger Blackhawk is worth $350 to $750. Rare variants can sell for over $2,000.

“Flattop” is an unofficial name for the very first Blackhawks made circa 1955-1962. The name comes from the lack of raised ridges or “ears” on either side of the rear sight.

Later Blackhawks got those ears to protect the rear sight from wear. This makes Flattops highly collectible and among the most prized of all Blackhawk variants.

This is a model that holds value well. Because it’s a premium firearm in the line, we use a secure gun shipping and buying system to ensure every transaction is fully insured and legally compliant.

“3-Screw” or Old Model Ruger Blackhawk Value

3 Screw Old Model Ruger Blackhawk worth

The average used 3 Screw Old Model Ruger Blackhawk is worth $300 to $600. Rare variants can sell for over $1,000.

Another variant with an unofficial designation, the 3-Screw Blackhawk was made from 1962 to 1972. Like the Colt Single-Action Army on which Blackhawks were based, this variant sported three screws on the right side of the frame.

The 3-Screw Blackhawks can overlap with other variants, e.g. 3-Screw Flattops exist. They were also closer to the Colt Single-Action Army in frame size than later Rugers. The later guns have larger frames.

“Brass-Grip-Frame” Ruger Blackhawk Value

Brass Grip Frame Ruger Blackhawk worth

The average used Brass Grip Frame Ruger Blackhawk is worth $375 to $800, but like-new and authenticated options sometimes sell for more.

Ruger Blackhawks with brass grip frames were made from 1971 to 1973. Most of them were made in 1972, which means most are 3-Screw or Old Model Blackhawks too.

Because only several thousand of these were made, they’re very desirable. Note that you can have an aftermarket brass grip frame on a Blackhawk, however. Many companies made these later on and owners just replaced their grip frames with them.

Those are worth much less than guns that shipped from the factory with authentic Ruger brass grip frames. Ruger offers to check if guns qualify for this in their records. They do charge $10 for the trouble and the letter of authenticity they provide, though.

New Model Blackhawk 357 Value

New Model Blackhawk 357 worth

The average used New Model Blackhawk is worth $275 to $550. A new New Model Blackhawk sells for around $879 at retail.

A New Model Blackhawk is just one made from 1973 onwards. These variants are among the easiest to find because they’re still being made today.

The New Model has a few clear differences from the Old Model. Aside from having two instead of three screws on the right side of the frame, it’s slightly larger.

It’s also most popular in its variant chambered for .357 Magnum, though it also comes in versions for .45 Colt, .41 Remington Magnum, and even .30 Carbine.

Ruger Super Blackhawk Value

Ruger Super Blackhawk worth

The average used Ruger Super Blackhawk is worth $350 to $650. A new Ruger Super Blackhawk sells for around $1,079 at retail.

This was introduced in 1959 as a larger-framed, heavier version. It was designed to better tolerate the recoil of .44 Magnums.

Earlier versions were nearly always blued and done so with a very attractive high polish. Collectors generally prefer the older versions for obvious historical value too. That means Ruger Super Blackhawk valuations tend to be a little higher for pre-73 guns in most markets.

Ruger Blackhawk Bisley Value

Ruger Blackhawk Bisley worth

The average used Ruger Blackhawk Bisley is worth $380 to $800. A new New Model Blackhawk Bisley sells for around $1,000 at retail.

This is a version made in 1986 and equipped with the angled Bisley-style grip. Designed for target shooting, it’s still made today, albeit in limited quantities.

Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk Hunter Value

The average used Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk Hunter is worth $370 to $800. A new Super Blackhawk Hunter sells for $1,249 at retail.

This is a long-barreled version chambered for .44 Remington Magnums and .44 Specials. It’s also finished in stainless steel for a sleek, high-polish look.

Ruger Blackhawk 357 50th Anniversary Value

Ruger Blackhawk 357 50th Anniversary worth

The average used Ruger Blackhawk 357 50th Anniversary model is worth $400 to $800.

This is a special edition made in 2005. It’s very similar to the Old Model thanks to its flattop frame and size. Where it departs from it is the inclusion of the transfer bar safety and steel grip frame.

How We Appraise Ruger Blackhawk Finishes

Ruger Blackhawk finish value

Ruger Blackhawks come in two stock finishes: blued and stainless. As to which one is more valuable, the answer is… it depends.

Blued

For New Model Blackhawks: This is the more common finish, so it’s usually worth about 10% less than the stainless one for modern guns.

For Old Model Blackhawks: Ones with superior (earlier-style) bluing will even get a value gain of 10%.

Stainless

For New Model Blackhawks: The less common finish, so usually worth about 10% more than blued one for these modern firearms.

For Old Model Blackhawks: No price increase vs. blued ones.

Others (Aftermarket)

Some people get their Blackhawks refinished (and even add things like engraving on top).

However, this rarely adds to the gun’s valuation. Most people don’t want a Blackhawk with aftermarket finishes. As such, most aftermarket-finished Blackhawks aren’t actually worth more in resale.

How Accessories Affect What We Pay for Your Blackhawk

Ruger Blackhawk accessory values

Blackhawks don’t often get accessories in the way modern guns do. These aren’t guns where you’ll typically find people tacking on an optic or weapon light, for instance!

But there are still some accessories that can improve your gun’s resale value. We say “can” because it’s not always certain. Some buyers won’t want to pay for what they see as extras.

In any case, you can always offer the gun and accessories to us if you can’t find anyone willing to make an offer for them. We acquire everything from firearm accessories to ammo!

Original Box and Papers

If your Blackhawk’s original packaging and papers are still in excellent condition, try selling them with the gun. The modern (plastic) packaging is worth less than the old boxes and papers, so keep that in mind.

Value: Around $10 to $20 for the modern matching box and papers, about double that if for the old models.

Spare Cylinders

We already mentioned that you can have spare cylinders for these revolvers. They cost about $100 a kit at retail.

Value: Around 30% to 50% of the original value.

General Questions & Answers

Yes, the Ruger Blackhawk typically features a transfer bar safety mechanism. This safety feature is designed to prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is deliberately pulled, enhancing the revolver's safety by reducing the risk of accidental discharges.

Yes, you can safely dry fire a Ruger Blackhawk. The transfer bar safety mechanism in the Blackhawk prevents the firing pin from making contact with the primer unless the trigger is pulled, even during dry firing.

The Ruger transfer bar is a safety feature that functions by intercepting the hammer's impact and preventing it from reaching the firing pin. When the trigger is pulled, the transfer bar rises, allowing the hammer to strike it. Only when the transfer bar is elevated by a deliberate trigger pull does it allow the hammer to contact the firing pin, thus ensuring that the revolver can only fire when the trigger is intentionally pulled.

A transfer bar can affect the value of a Blackhawk but it’s highly situational. For instance, Flattop Old Model Blackhawks are among the most collectible variants of the gun. They were also made before the transfer bar was added to the gun’s design. However, Ruger offered to convert older guns to transfer-bar designs when they first introduced the transfer bar mechanism. Some people took them up on it. If a Flattop Old Model Blackhawk has the conversion, it’s often deemed less valuable by collectors. That’s because it would no longer be in the original condition or configuration in which it was shipped out from the factory.

Some Ruger Blackhawks are collectible. There are limited editions, vintage versions in scarce supply, and so on. Great examples of collectible Blackhawks are the Flattop Blackhawks and the 3-Screw Blackhawks. That’s why Flattop and 3 Screw Ruger Blackhawk value tends to be higher than values for standard Blackhawks.

Super Blackhawks are simply the bigger, heavier version of the gun modified to better deal with the recoil of firing .44 Magnums.

To tell if a Blackhawk is a Flattop, check the rear sight. If it’s perfectly level with the rest of the top of the gun, it’s a Flattop. If it looks like there are raised ridges or “ears” of metal on both of the two long sides of the rear sight, it’s not a Flattop.

The Ruger Blackhawk .30 Carbine price is the same as that for similar-model Blackhawks chambered for different calibers. That means the New Model Ruger 30 Carbine Blackhawk value is $879 when new and around $350 to $550 when used.

In most cases, caliber doesn’t affect the value of Ruger Blackhawks that are otherwise the same model. For example, the Ruger 45 Caliber New Model Blackhawk price is typically equal to the 357 Blackhawk’s price. Both start at $879 at retail and around $350 used.

In most cases, barrel length doesn’t affect the value of Ruger Blackhawks that are otherwise the same model. “Hunter” or long versions usually cost the same as short versions. For example, the Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt 7.5” barrel price is typically the same as the 4.62” version’s price. Both versions start at $879 new.

It depends on your specific gun how old it is, but as a model, the Ruger Blackhawk 357 has been in production since 1955. So, it’s been in production for more than half a century!

Some Ruger Blackhawks are chambered for Magnums. It depends on the model and variant.

Ruger Blackhawks can be difficult to value for a lot of reasons. The possibility of aftermarket modifications can easily alter the collectible value of a Blackhawk, for example.
