How It Works in Alabama
Three Ways to Sell a Gun in Alabama
If you want to sell a gun in Alabama, you have three real options. A gun shop or pawn shop can pay you on the spot, but they need room to resell your gun at a profit. A private sale through an online gun trading site or Alabama firearms classifieds looks like it pays more, but once you've screened strangers, set up the meeting and dealt with no-shows, it often nets about the same as our offer, or less. Or you sell to us from home: describe the gun, get an offer, and print the prepaid label if you accept.
You Get a Real Offer, Not a Lowball
Every offer is built on what your specific gun sells for right now: make, model, condition and demand.
Alabama offers usually come back in under 2 hours.
Federally Licensed Dealer
With no background check required on Alabama private sales, it's on you to judge whether a buyer can legally own a gun. We're a federally licensed dealer with SOT status, and we handle the transfer on our end. There's no buyer for you to vet.
Open When the Shops Aren't
Looking for gun shops that buy guns open now? Most keep store hours. You can send us your gun's details any time, and real people answer the phone 7 a.m. to midnight ET, every day of the year.

Ammo & Accessories
Not Sure What You Have?
Send us photos and we'll tell you. Appraisal is free and there's no obligation to sell.
Get a free appraisal →NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, machine guns) need ATF approval before they change hands, so they don't ship on our standard label. Call us first and we'll walk you through our process.
Straight Talk
How Our Offer Compares to a Private Sale in Alabama
Alabama doesn't require a background check on a private sale, and there's no state form to file. That makes selling it yourself look like the best payday, but buyers have no reason to trust a seller with no history, you can't take a card, and no-shows and back-outs eat the difference. You're also the one deciding whether that buyer can legally own a gun. A private sale often lands around our offer, or under it. If you'd rather hold out for the highest price, we offer consignment too. Our cash offer fits sellers who want a set number, speed and no meetup.

Alabama Rules
How to Sell a Gun in Alabama Legally
Alabama keeps it simple for sellers. Private sales of handguns and long guns need no state background check, and nothing in state law makes you wait, get a permit or register the gun. Since October 2024, state law also bars the government from keeping a registry of privately owned guns. Local governments can't layer on their own gun rules; Alabama reserves that power to the state.
There are still rules. Alabama makes it a crime to sell, give or lend a pistol to a minor. Those laws don't put a number on "minor," and Alabama's age of majority is 19, so don't sell a handgun to anyone under 19. You also can't hand a pistol to someone you have reason to believe is barred, such as a person convicted of a crime of violence or under a domestic-abuse protection order. Federal law goes further: never sell any gun to someone you know or have reason to believe can't legally own one. Selling to a resident of another state? Federal law routes that sale through a licensed dealer.
Selling to us hands the screening to a federally licensed dealer, and the sale is recorded on our end. Alabama doesn't add a permit, report or waiting period when you sell to a licensed dealer.

Private Sales
Resident-to-resident sales need no state check, whether it's a pistol or a rifle.
No Wait, No Permit, No Registry
Sales close without a wait or a permit. A 2024 law keeps the government from listing who owns what.
Handguns and Minors
Selling, giving or lending a pistol to a minor is a crime, and Alabama's age of majority is 19.
Glock Switches
Since March 2025, owning or selling a part that converts a pistol to fire automatically is a felony in Alabama unless it's registered under federal law. If you're not sure whether a part counts, send a photo before you pack anything.
Restricted Ammo
Brass or steel Teflon-coated handgun ammunition is illegal to own or sell in Alabama. Leave it out of your box.
Selling to Us
We're the licensed buyer, so there's no one for you to vet.
Use this as a starting point, not legal advice: it's our plain-English reading of Alabama law in October 2026. An Alabama attorney can advise on your situation, and our team handles questions about selling to us.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Alabama sellers ask before they ship us a firearm.
It all happens from home. Describe your gun and add a few photos, accept our real offer if it works for you, and ship it on the prepaid, insured label we email. Our Jacksonville, Florida, headquarters checks it in, and you're paid the same day your gun arrives.
No. Private sales of handguns and long guns between Alabama residents don't require one. The limits are on who you sell to: never anyone you know or have reason to believe can't legally own a gun, and never a handgun to a minor. Background checks apply when a licensed dealer sells a gun.
No on all three counts. Alabama repealed its old pistol purchase-application law in 2000, and a 2024 law bars the government from keeping a registry of privately owned guns.
Many do, and they can pay on the spot. They also need room to resell your gun at a profit, and their offer reflects that. We buy direct and sell to buyers across the country. Get our offer first, then compare.
You don't need one nearby. From anywhere in Alabama, we send a prepaid label, you ship from home, and real people answer 7 a.m. to midnight ET, 365 days a year.
Not directly. Under federal law, an interstate private sale has to be handled by a licensed dealer. Selling to us is different, because we're the licensed dealer.
Expect roughly 2 to 3 business days from most of Alabama. We pay for the label, and your package is insured the whole way.
Yes. Whether you're the spouse, an heir or the executor, we can appraise the entire estate and make one offer for all of it, with the transfer handled on our end. Our page on selling a gun collection or estate walks through the steps.

A Licensed Dealer, Not a Marketplace
Cash for Arms is a Federal Firearms Licensee with SOT status, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. When you take our offer, we buy your gun ourselves. We don't list it and wait for a stranger to bid. Every gun you sell us ships on a prepaid insured label straight to our licensed HQ, where an adult signs for it and it's checked before you're paid.
