Option 2: Local Gun Shops
Some North Dakota gun stores buy used guns. If you don’t mind low offers and the time required to drive to multiple shops for appraisals, they provide:
- Face-to-face transactions
- Up-front payment, often cash
- The safety of selling to a licensed dealer
To sell to them, do this:
- Contact local gun shops to ask if they’re interested.
- Bring the unloaded gun to the interested shops.
- Collect as many offers as you can and negotiate.
- Sell the gun to the shop with the best offer.
Option 3: Local Pawn Shops
Some pawn shops are also FFLs and can buy as well as pawn guns. They often pay the least of all buyers, however.
If you’re fine with that, they offer the same things as gun shops. You can also follow the same process to sell to them.
Option 4: Private Sale
Private individuals are people in North Dakota who are eligible to buy or own guns. It’s called a private gun sale when you sell to them.
They take the most work of all options and can also take the most time, but if you’re fine with that, they offer:
- Potentially better prices than local gun or pawn shops
- More control over sale terms
To sell to them, do this:
- Make a listing of your gun with details and photos.
- Publish the listing on local ranges’ bulletin boards or online forums.
- Wait for offers.
- Screen for eligible buyers.
- Negotiate until you reach acceptable terms.
- Meet your buyer at a public place in daytime to complete the sale.

North Dakota Gun Laws

North Dakota has preemption, which means local governments can’t impose gun regulations stricter than the state ones. Gun sellers here generally need to check only the state and federal legislation.
- Private gun sales - Legal in North Dakota.
- Background checks - Not required.
- Minimum age - 18 for handguns in private sales (N.D. Cent. Code Chapter 62. 1-02-01).
- ID requirements - None, unless to verify age.
- Waiting periods - None.
- Gun registration - Not required.
- Transaction records - Not required for private gun sales.
- Eligibility to own guns - Required for buyers. Check the ATF list to see who’s prohibited and the North Dakota one (though it mostly just echoes the ATF list).
Note that all of these are for gun sales between two parties within the same state. If you’re selling to a private buyer who resides in another state, you need an FFL to process the sale.
