Prohibited Persons
A prohibited person is someone who can’t buy a gun in Scottsdale or the rest of Arizona.
You can check who’s a prohibited person in 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) (the Gun Control Act) and Ariz. Rev. Stat § 13-3101 (the Arizona Penal Code). Here are examples of prohibited buyers:
- Illegal aliens
- Fugitives from justice
- People convicted of felonies
- Illegal users or addicts of controlled substances
- Those with verdicts of not guilty by reason of insanity
- People under the age of 18 (this becomes 21 if the seller is an FFL)
NFA or Prohibited Gun Sales
NFA guns or parts are ones regulated by the National Firearms Act. The following are examples:
- Silencers
- Machine guns
- Rifles that have barrels under 16”
- Shotguns that have barrels under 18”
- Rifles and shotguns with total lengths under 26”
- Fully automatic guns made before May 19, 1986
Selling NFA guns is more complicated and involves many requirements. These include registration, a $200 transfer tax, and ATF approval. If you have to sell one, contact an FFL.
Scottsdale Gun Sale Laws

ID isn’t required for private gun sales in Scottsdale (but it is for sales by FFLs). Consider asking for it to at least prove they’re of age and residents of the state, however.
