A firearm bill of sale is not a legal requirement for North Carolina gun sales. Private (non-dealer) gun sellers in the state don’t even need Form 4473.
In spite of that, you may want to use a firearm bill of sale in NC. We’ve provided a free form you can use below when selling guns in North Carolina.
The Required Forms for Gun Sales

1. Form 4473
Form 4473 is a firearms transaction record. It’s required specifically from people buying guns from a licensed firearms dealer. It often starts the background check process.
If you want to get a Form 4473 ahead of your visit to the gun dealer’s store, download it here.
2. NC Firearm Bill of Sale
Again, North Carolina’s laws do not require a bill of sale for gun transactions. Private sellers use bills of sale of their own volition, to give themselves added security.
You can store yours with photo copies of the other party’s ID for safety. Click on the link below to use our free bill of sale template.
