Determining the exact condition of a Glock can be subjective. To see how we professionally evaluate your firearm and turn that condition into a payout, view our 3-step selling process for a guaranteed FFL offer.

Once you know your gun’s condition, you can use these tiers to estimate how much the gun's worth:

How We Appraise Glock 17 Models

Glock 17 models have gone through a lot of iterations. Let’s break them up specifically into generations first.

Glock 17 Gen 1 Value

Glock 17 Gen 1 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 1 is worth $200 to $500. A Pencil Barrel Glock 17 is worth around $1,500 to $5,600.

Glock 17 Generation 1 pistols were made from 1982 to 1988. They have a “pebblestone” texture on the grip and often have a parkerized barrel.

Other common features include 2-pin design and a smooth dust cover. In the front strap, there was also a mag well relief shaped like a half-moon.

The most desirable versions are the Pencil Barrel Glock 17 pistols made in the 80’s. These are long-slide versions. Glock only did 2 runs of them, so they’re rare.

This is a model that holds value well. Because it’s a premium collectible in the line, we use a secure gun shipping and buying system to ensure every transaction is fully insured and legally compliant.

Glock 17 Gen 2 Value

Glock 17 Gen 2 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 2 is worth $160 to $320.

The Glock 17 Generation 2 pistols were made from 1988 to 1998. Many are confused for Gen 1 guns.

The easy way to tell them apart is the grip. If the pebblestone texture wraps around the grip 360 degrees, it’s Gen 1. The Glock 17 Gen 2 pistols have side panels that don’t wrap around the gun.

The G17 Gen 2 panels have a deeper texture than Gen 1s. They also have checkered front and back straps and 5 more calibers.

Glock 17 Gen 3 Value

Glock 17 Gen 3 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 3 is worth $200 to $320. A new Glock 17 Gen 3 costs $499 at retail.

Glock 17 Gen 3 pistols are still in production (mainly for California). They were introduced in 1997 and brought molded finger grooves to the G17 front strap.

These also have thumb rests at the top of the grip and accessory rails in the dust cover. Some of them are collectible and are worth more. We’ll take them up separately later.

Glock 17 Gen 4 Value

Glock 17 Gen 4 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 4 is worth $200 to $320.

Generation 4 Glock 17s were made from 2008 to 2020. They added modular backstraps, redesigned internals, and the aggressive “pyramid texture” on the side panels.

These guns also have a grip thumb wrest and accessory or light rail. They’re now discontinued.

Glock 17 Gen 5 Value

Glock 17 Gen 5 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 5 is worth $200 to $350. A new Glock 17 Gen 5 costs $499 at retail.

These were introduced in 2017. They include an ambidextrous slide release, flat front strap, flared magazine sides, and a marksman barrel. They still have the Gen 4 pyramid texture and accessory rail.

These are still in production.

Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS Value

Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS is worth $300 to $450. A new Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS costs about $599 at retail.

MOS stands for the Modular Optic System. A Glock 17 MOS is basically a gun that’s been pretapped for optic mounting.

Glock 17 Gen 3 RTF2 Value

Glock 17 Gen 3 RTF2 value

The average used Glock 17 Gen 3 RTF2 is worth $300 to $600.

Only a few Gen 3 guns were ever made with the RTF2 or rough-textured frame 2 grips. This was the early trial of the pattern that would later become the Glock Generation 4 pyramid texture.

Because they’re rare, used Glock 17 price averages for them tend to be higher.

Glock 17C Value

Glock 17C value

The average used Glock 17C is worth $240 to $450.

This is the compensator-cut version. It’s supposed to have lower muzzle rise, permitting faster follow-up shots. It was discontinued after Gen 4, so only Gen 3 and Gen 4 17C pistols exist.

Glock 17L Value

Glock 17L value

The average used Glock 17L is worth $350 to $750 for Gen 2 to Gen 5. Glock 17L Gen 1 guns can cost more.

These are the competition or match versions of the gun. A 17L has a longer barrel, longer slide, and lightened trigger pull, among other tweaks for enhanced performance.

The Glock 17L Gen 1 and 2 guns have the highest value because they’re most collectible. Glock 17L Gen 1 value can even reach $1,600.

Glock 17M Value

Glock 17M value

The average used Glock 17M is worth $350 to $650.

The 17M is a Gen 5 Glock that’s basically the duty version of the standard 17. It has a specially coated trigger bar and connector, but is very like the commercial one in most ways.

Because it’s so functionally similar to the standard G17, most of what you’re paying for here is the collectible value of a made-for-the-FBI gun. It also comes with the AmeriGlo FBI Contract Sights.

Glock 17T Value

Glock 17T value

The average used Glock 17T is worth $200 to $350. A new Glock 17T costs $400 at retail.

The Glock 17T is a tactical operations training pistol. Typically used with plastic bullets, it’s easily recognizable from its bright blue frame.

You’ll usually find these on the market as surplus from military or law enforcement training centers.

How Upgrades Affect What We Pay for Your G17

Glock 17 price with case and mags

There are several common accessories and upgrades for these guns. While they can affect used Glock 17 9mm price ranges, it’s not guaranteed.

That’s because only great-quality ones from known manufacturers actually add value. Furthermore, some buyers really just want the gun and not the extras.

These feel better and let you change mags faster than the stock release. They can keep 30% to 50% of their value if in excellent condition.

  • Glockstore Rectangular Extended Mag Release - $10.50 to $17.50 used

  • Timney Alpha Competition Series - $45 to $75 used

Original Tupperware Boxes and Manuals

These come with new Glock 17s, so some buyers will pay to get them with a used gun. Usually, it’s for provenance or confirmation of the gun’s authenticity. Most aren’t worth that much, but things change for the collectible Gen 1 guns.

  • Gen 3, Gen 4, Gen 5 Manuals and Boxes - $5 to $10 used
  • Gen 2 Manuals and Boxes - $15 to $30 used
  • Gen 1 Manuals and Boxes - $30 to $50 for good-condition boxes, $5 to $800 for good-condition manuals (the upper end is for the manuals that came with the first Glock 17s ever made)

General Questions & Answers

It depends what you mean by “best.” The latest generation, Gen 5, is widely considered the best in practical performance. It offers improved ergonomics, a marksman barrel, and enhanced components for the gun. However, if you’re talking about the “best” Glock 17 in terms of historical significance, a case may be made for other generations.

Some Glock 17s are rare enough to be collectible, like a “pencil barrel” Glock 17. Very widely available ones like Gen 3s, Gen 4s, and Gen 5s aren’t.

A pencil barrel Glock is one of the very first Glock 17 pistols ever made. It’s known for having thinner, more pencil-like barrels than later Glocks. Only around 1,000 of these were made because Glock soon tweaked the Glock 17’s design to have thicker barrels.

The original Tupperware box can help bring up the value of a preowned Glock 17. This is especially true if both the gun and box are in good condition. The amount it adds to your gun’s value varies, however. Boxes for Gen 3 and later guns are worth just $10 or so, usually. Ones for Gen 2 can go up to about $30 in some cases. Gen 1 boxes are most desirable, especially with the “Best in Market” sticker. You can sometimes get $50 for those alone.

The Glock 17 is particularly well-suited for self-defense, law enforcement, and competitive shooting due to its balanced features. Sellers usually advertise it based on those virtues.

The latest generation, Gen 5, offers improved ergonomics, marksman barrel, and enhanced components for the Glock 17. This is why it often has the best values among the common variants of the gun.

An interesting fact about the Glock 17 was that it was Gaston Glock's first firearm design, featuring a polymer frame that was innovative at the time.

The best Glock 9mm model can vary based on personal preferences, but the Glock 17 and Glock 19 are both popular and respected choices.

The slow transition of Glock generations can make it very hard to tell them apart. You’d be surprised how many people have misidentified RTF2 Gen 3s as Gen 4s, for instance!

That’s why it’s worth talking to a gun expert who can value your Glock and pay what it's really worth. Talk to us for that.
