There’s no shortage of custom 1911s on the market, but this one’s special. Each Nighthawk Vice President is crafted by one of 20 in-house master gunsmiths. From the moment it hits his bench, no other person can touch it until it’s time for the finish.

The result is a stylish and substantial gun that few can ignore. It’s not for everyone – the pricing guarantees that – but is nonetheless a gun nearly everyone would like to try once. That’s why it’s worth knowing the value of a Nighthawk Vice President!

Current Market Value of a NightHawk Vice President

While prices can vary, a typical NightHawk Vice President is worth around $3800, but the price range generally falls between $3000 on the low end to as high as $4500. But a well preserved NightHawk Vice President in its original condition is worth the most.

So, how much is a Nighthawk Vice President?

While prices vary, a typical preowned NightHawk Vice President is worth around $3,100.

The price range for a standard-configuration one is generally $2,250 to $3,700 if preowned. For reference, the same gun often retails new for $4,799.

Take note that Nighthawk offers the gun in a number of configurations that can alter pricing. For example, changing the frame to a double-stack one (to increase capacity) will add $800 to the base retail price. That’s why different Vice Presidents can have wildly different price tags.

What Affects the Price of a Nighthawk Vice President?

Preowned Nighthawk Vice President prices are affected by the condition of the gun and its configuration.

“Configuration” means a lot of things here. A Vice President is explicitly a custom gun. Nighthawk allows you to configure its parts heavily, from the barrel to the magwell.

To make it easier for you to value your Vice President, we’ll discuss all of the popular customizations for the gun. We’ll also discuss estimates of what they add to preowned values below.

But first, let’s find out how to judge the gun’s condition.

Condition Grades for a Nighthawk Vice President

Empty Nighthawk Vice President

A Nighthawk Vice President is like other preowned guns. It sells for more if it’s in better condition.

To judge the condition of your gun for value assessment, here’s a guide to the grades:

  • Mint - Preowned but never used, perfectly functional, and perfect in presentation. Subtract 10% or so from the retail price.
  • Excellent - Almost never used, with almost no wear, and absolutely no functional defects. Subtract 20% or so from the retail price.
  • Very Good - Occasionally used, with just a few wear or physical marks, and perfectly functional. Subtract 30% or so from the retail price.
  • Good - Often used, meticulously maintained despite showing wear, and perfectly functional. Subtract only 40% or so from the retail price.
  • Fair - Often used, not maintained and thus clearly worn, with possible mild dysfunctions. Subtract around 50% or so from the retail price.
  • Poor - Abused, very worn, possibly rusty, and perhaps not even working. Go below 50% of retail pricing for this.

Nighthawk Vice President Configurations

Three sight configurations for NightHawk VP pistol

A Nighthawk Vice President can come in a standard configuration and a custom configuration right out of Nighthawk’s workshops.

To get an estimate of the gun’s value with a custom configuration, follow these steps:

  • Look for the prices of the upgrades below.
  • Add the cost of the upgrade to the standard configuration’s retail value of $4,799.
  • With that sum, estimate the gun’s value using our guide to gun condition grades.

Example:

A Vice President with the Threaded Barrel Upgrade would cost $4,999 at retail. That’s from adding up these values:

  • $4,799 (the standard Vice President’s retail value)
  • $200 (the barrel upgrade’s retail value)

If it’s in mint condition, the same gun in the preowned market could sell for as much as $4,499. That’s from performing this calculation:

  • = $4,999 - (10% of $4,999)
  • = $4,999 - $499.9
  • = $4,499.1

Why did we deduct 10% from the retail value? Because mint-condition preowned guns lose around 10% of retail value, as per our guide to gun conditions and values earlier.

Nighthawk Vice President Barrel Options

The standard barrel is a 4.25” hand-fit and match-grade 9mm. Here are the custom options and upgrades with the amount they add to retail value:

  • Fluted barrel upgrade, 9mm only = $200

Nighthawk Vice President Finishes

The default finish for a Vice President is the DLC one with a gold titanium nitride barrel. However, Nighthawk offers a wide range of other finishes at no added cost.

The only upgrade that costs anything here is the frame and slide polishing. Take note that it’s only available for the DLC and stainless finishes, however.

  • Polishing of the frame and slide = $150
  • Cerakote (in 6 colours), blackout, battle-worn (in steel or bronze), custom silver patriot (with American flag design), shadow camo (in 3 colours), urban multi finish (in 5 colours), stainless steel = Available at no cost from Nighthawk

Nighthawk Vice President Frame

The standard Vice President sports a forged Commander-size and hand-fit frame. It has no light rail by default.

There are quite a few customizations possible here, though. They can add a lot to the total price.

  • Aluminum frame = $200
  • Double-stack upgrade = $800
  • Recon rail = $100
  • Hand-stippling on the underside of the trigger guard = $175
  • Checkering the front of the trigger guard = $200

  • Hand-stippling the front of the trigger guard = $200

Nighthawk Vice President Front Strap and Mainspring Housing

The standard Vice President has a front strap and mainspring housing with a specific checkering pattern. It’s 25 lines per inch.

That can be customized upon ordering the gun:

  • Reduced checkering of front strap to 20 lines per inch = $100
  • Increased checkering of front strap to 30 lines per inch = $100
  • Hand-stippling the front strap of the frame = $200
  • Hand-stippling the mainspring housing = $75
  • Scalloping the front strap = $100
  • Scalloping the mainspring housing = $50

Nighthawk Vice President Guide Rods

  • Full-length guide rod = $50
  • Everlast = $50

Nighthawk Vice President Magwell

Nighthawk also offers one upgrade for the magwell of the Vice President:

  • Contoured carry cut = $150

Nighthawk Vice President Safety

The default safety is a hand-blended grip one. It can be replaced with this:

  • Ambidextrous safety = $150

Nighthawk Vice President Sight

The standard configuration of the gun has Heinie Ledge solid black rear sight with a 14K solid gold bead front sight. It’s possible to get the gun with these customizations, however:

  • Suppressor-ready sight upgrade for front and rear = $100
  • Tritium sight = $50
  • Fiber-optic front sight = $50
  • Adjustable sight with tritium = $150

  • IOS plate for Trijicon RMR = $150
  • Trijicon RMR (RM06) = $700

Nighthawk Vice President Slide

The hand-fit standard slide is an angular piece with cuts that both reduce weight and add to its style. However, there are further customizations possible:

  • Additional NH extractor finished and tuned to match the pistol = $115
  • Checkering on the slide’s rear = $200
  • Serration on the slide’s rear = $125

Nighthawk vs. Aftermarket Customization Values

Two NightHawk VP pistols

All of the customizations we’ve discussed so far are ones done by Nighthawk. An aftermarket customization is one not applied by Nighthawk.

Say you order the gun from Nighthawk and then have a different company refinish it, for example. That’s an aftermarket customization.

These aren’t too common for Nighthawk guns. That’s because Nighthawk guns are custom ones from the start, so most buyers just get their customization done by Nighthawk itself.

Unless an aftermarket customization is done very well and by a recognized artisan or brand, it will often lose more value than a Nighthawk customization in the preowned market. That’s because it’s not part of the gun’s “factory” configuration.

For aftermarket customization, expect value retention to often range from 20% to 50% of what you originally paid for the customization. The upgrade’s condition can drive this up or down too.

Example:

You add an aftermarket sight to the Nighthawk Vice President. Say these things are true:

  • The sight is worth $50 new.
  • The sight is in superb, nearly mint condition when you decide to sell it with the gun.

This means you can add as much as 50% of the sight’s value to your gun’s sale price. That’s $25.

General Questions & Answers

A lot of custom handgun enthusiasts believe the Nighthawk Vice President is worth it. This is generally considered one of the best-made custom 1911s. Extreme attention to detail and quality control go into these guns. They’re also made according to Nighthawk Custom’s famous slogan of “one gun, one gunsmith.”

Nighthawk Vice Presidents are made in a hand-built, non-assembly-line process. Individual craftsmen work on each of these guns to produce a highly polished and tuned firearm. It’s even possible to receive a Vice President made by one of the few active members of the renowned American Pistol smiths Guild. This gives Vice Presidents a level of manufacturing artistry many other guns don’t.

The Nighthawk Vice President’s grip features a distinctive relief that resembles a honeycomb, called RailScales by Nighthawk. This is made out of garolite or high-pressure fiberglass laminate.

The Nighthawk Vice President’s slide has been cut for both visual distinction and weight reduction. The cuts also make the gold-plated barrel visible for added appeal.

Despite our guide to preowned Vice President value calculation, it’s not easy to appraise these guns. You need experience and a good deal of familiarity with the market for accurate value estimates.
